Upgrade To Windows 10 Before Time Runs Out

by | Jun 14, 2016 | News | 2 comments

You probably know by now that Microsoft is giving away its’ next generation operating system, Windows 10, for free. What you may not know is that the offer is only good for a certain amount of time. To take advantage of the upgrade offer, computer owners are supposed to upgrade their computers before July 29, 2016. At the time of this writing, that leave just a short 45 days left to get everything in order.

Have no fear, this blog post will point you in the right direction as to how to get this done.

Do I Want To Upgrade To Windows 10?

Our clients ask us daily if they should upgrade to Windows 10 or not. The simple answer is, yes, you will want to upgrade.

Here’s why:

  • Windows 10 Is Faster – The entire operating system has been rebuilt from the ground up. This means that your computer will be able to run more efficiently because of the updated code.
  • Windows 10 Is More Secure – With Windows 10, users can feel confident that the latest security measures are being used, protecting from viruses and malware.
  • Cortana – You can search with ease using the newest search tool from Microsoft, called Cortana.
  • Microsoft Edge – Internet Explorer has been replaced with the newest version called Microsoft Edge. Collaborate easier using the latest web browser.
  • Updates – With Windows 10, you will receive perpetual updates. This means that Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows you will have to upgrade to. In the future, upgrades will be installed every 3 months, and any new features or changes will be made is a smaller upgrade.

How Do I Get Windows 10

The first step you want to make is to verify you are eligible. If you have Windows 7 or higher, you most likely are. Any Windows XP or Vista computers are not eligible, simply because the hardware that these operating systems ran on are too outdated. In that case, you will want to purchase a new computer to benefit from the latest Windows 10 operating system.

Visit the Windows 10 Upgrade page to confirm you are eligible and see if your applications are going to work once you update. If you are ready to upgrade, you can download and run the Windows 10 Upgrade Tool. Once you do this, the tool will inform you the status of things like drivers, software, and hardware specs on your computer and if they will work or not.

If you are eligible, and your computer will work with Windows 10, you can begin the process from here. Most likely, the files that are needed are already downloaded to your computer. Over the past several months, Microsoft has been pushing these files to every eligible computer in the hopes this will speed up the process of upgrading. If your computer does not have these files, the upgrade tool will start to download the files in the background and will notify you when it is available.Windows10Lifestyle

At this point, it would be a good time to make sure your data is backed up to a flash drive or external hard drive, specifically pictures. Most upgrades we have seen are successful, but there are times where an upgrade will fail because of outdated hardware drivers, or infected computers with malware. If you don’t already have it installed, download and run the free trial of Malwarebytes. This program will scan your computer for issues and clean them up if you have any. If nothing is found, you can start the upgrade process.

If all that sounds too technical, you can always bring your computer in to our shop to have us perform the Windows 10 upgrade. Our technicians will thoroughly go through your computer and make sure the computer runs at peak performance once it is upgraded.

Business Computers

If your computer is part of a domain, or is involved with a business network, you will most likely not have seen the offer to upgrade to Windows 10 as your network administrator has probably hid that from you. This is in attempt to allow the administrators to plan out the Windows 10 upgrade and prevent the user from damaging their computers.

The other thing that this allows is to make sure that any line of business applications used at that business are compatible with Windows 10 prior to upgrading.

We’ve been upgrading computers and software at many of our business clients that rely on us to manage their IT.

Conclusion

We’ve been using and testing Windows 10 ever since the Insider program was released in 2014. All of our office computers and even personal computers have been upgraded, and we have completely enjoyed having the latest version on hand.

Our computers are more efficient, faster, and more secure with Windows 10 as the operating system.

We encourage you to upgrade. If you don’t want to try the upgrade yourself, give us a call and we’ll help you out.
